In this project I will undertake practical investigation. This investigation will aid the understanding of the visual work that must be critiqued.
For this practical investigation I am going to look into illustration, type, constructivism, cartooning, satirical humour and modernism. I will look at producing a piece of work on todays nuclear tension, the conflict in Syria and extremism. I want to carry a liberal message and be sympathetic to those who are dying innocently in todays conflicts.
I will research Cold War propaganda and modern forms of propaganda and compare the two while looking into styles of illustration, cartooning and caricature. I will look into the print methods that were used during the Cold War. With this I will experiment with past print techniques and compare them to modern techniques but try and create the print style from 60's propaganda.
To test all this I will use peer feedback to see if my work is holding a relatable message that people can agree on.
My research question is: “Discuss the role that Graphic Design can play during periods of political and/or social upheaval." I want to prove that the Cold War is responsible for the advancement of art and design much like it was for the advancement of technology. I will be looking into political pieces of propaganda as well as design based around consumerism. For secondary research I will look into books and websites and for primary research I will look for exhibitions related to political design work. Researching into how the design processes engages an audience and makes them think and consider the message it holds will answer my research question. To test this I will create a design and ask for feedback and opinions to see if it makes the audience think about the political message and todays issues.
