Firstly modernism is anti historicist. It doesn’t look back in history to solve the future it will only look forward using new technology, new designs, new materials. This is very different from postmodernism which lends from past and uses previous techniques. There is a theory that modernism died on 15 July 1972 at 3:32pm with the demolition of a modernist housing district. This followed with pessimism and a cynical view of modernism’s ambitions. Jameson talks about pastiche and parody being affected by postmodernism which will be focussed on in my essay.
The lecturer also recommended a couple of books that could be useful for researching modernism:
Pedagogical Sketchbook, Paul Klee, 1925
Point and Line to Plane, Sassily Kandinsky, 1926
Language of Vision, Gyorgy Keeps, 1944
Vision in Motion, Lazlo Moholy-Hagy, 1947
