Looking at the background of film, lighting was used to create emotion in the audience without being able to capture colour. In the 1920's chiaroscuro was a popular technique which was revived in the 1950's in film noir.
Once colour was introduced into film, it gave film makers more freedom and the use of colour palettes were a big focus in set design. Examples in film where colour has played a huge part of this is in films such as Schindler's List (1993), A Single Man (2009), Carol (2015), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) and Her (2013). There are some films who's production design and art direction is such a huge part of the film it is used to target the audience. Such as Wes Anderson films.
Title sequences are another area where graphic design has an impact on film and often creates the mood of the film from the start. Such as Catch Me If You Can (2002), The Incredibles (2004) or any James Bond film.
There were a few quotes I had pulled out that will help with where to start research. There are many books by Saul Bass who designed many opening sequences for films, including The Man with the Golden Arm (1955). There are other quotes by Jacquie Wilson and Mark de Valk that will help with research.
After presenting this to a focus group, there was plenty of useful feedback. Many felt that the title sequence focus could be a whole essay in itself. Many preferred the direction to look at art direction in set and production design and that using colour as a focus was interesting. A few people were nervous that this may turn into a film essay so it is important to ensure that it is clear that this essay will focus on the graphic design aspect.
