OUGD601 - Research: Russian Constructivism

Christina Lodder gives an overview of Russian Constructivism and looks at how it began and developed and it's underlying themes. Constructivism was a modernist movement that was a direct product of the Russian revolution. The following aspiration for a utopian life influenced artists and designers.

Artists had an approach to working with real materials and an underlying concept that their work may contribute to social and political transformation. Their use of real materials held an industrial emphasis.
'This first use of the term 'Constructivism' links to the concept of the merging of art and life through mass production.' Lodder, 1983, 2
This is an easy understanding of Constructivism, a movement that was quite different from German Expressionism, there is a sense of optimism in work that was being produced in Russia and it can be seen through all the arts.
