OUGD601 - Practical ideas

The practical work will be primary evidence for the essay question title. It is important that this practical work proves the relationship between graphic design and film art direction by allowing them to influence each other. There are a few examples of work that can be created to demonstrate this and they are examples of design that can be used as a practical exploration.

The first is exhibition curation. The identity and space can be designed with art direction techniques in mind. As the curation involves building a setting and it will influence the overall identity of the exhibition as well. An example of this is the Phantasm Exhibition in Colours May Vary, Leeds. Branded and curated by Lord Whitney, it is an example of graphic design and art direction influencing each other. Exhibition curation would be a successful project for this practical research.

Advertising is an example of graphic design that is influenced by film art direction and will be a beneficial practical exploration to evidence the essay. Sneaker advertising is a good example of this, as it is on trend and creatives can explore colour because of the nature of the product. One good example of art direction influencing advertising for trainers is the Asics Mexico 66 sneaker adverts, by Kaan Singh. Their exploration of colour is influenced by colour harmonies used in art direction, use of colour harmonies can be explored further using sneaker advertising.

In the same way sneaker advertising is influenced by film art direction, product advertising is also influenced. The Christmas Lacoste advertising by Hattie Newman is a good example of set design influencing graphic design and in the same way as sneaker advertising, is a good exploration in the use of colour as well as constructing a set. It may benefit the essay even further to take a product from a film and build an advert around it constructing a set and exploring the colour harmonies.

Launch campaigns are another form of advertising that can is influenced by production design. A launch campaign for a Kenzo season launch, by Jess Bonham and Anna Lomax, combines set design with the fashion items to create gifs. This is a moving form of advertising, compared to the stills previously looked at. These examples are strong and eye-catching and demonstrate production design influencing a different kind of design with its moving image.
